Special Visit – Musée Jacquemart-André with Dr. Kelly Spearman
Musée Jacquemart – André: collecting with passion!
A XIXth century extravaganza
When a penchant for Dutch Masters meets a taste for the exquisiteness of 18th-century French art, both sharing a passion for the Italian Renaissance, the result is the opulence of the Jacquemart – André collection. Nothing can equal a visit to the opulent interiors displaying works of stunning beauty, diversity, rarity and refinement put together by a rather eccentric XIXth century couple in their former grand private residence: In a perfect setting of a typically majestic 19th-century hôtel particulier of the upper-class bourgeoisie, displaying a plethora of masterpieces and boasting a Tiepolo fresco, rooms decorated with superb tapestries and furnished with original pieces, this extravagant household with all its richness and rare treasures remains the dream of every collectionneur and a delight for all. Of course, all this is the official version. What about the petite histoire which explains just how exactly two individuals, so totally different in every possible aspect, ever came together? How on earth was it possible for them to get their hands on so much breathtaking foreign art (not to mention take those valuable national treasures out of the countries of origin)? Where did the necessary colossal funds come from? What was the contemporaries’ attitude towards this strange couple? Was their union a happy one, malgré the moral verdict? And how can one omit the family’s final disillusionment? One of the most beautiful Victorian-era mansions, a setting of one of the most breath-taking ever private collections, with an amazing story for its extraordinary owners: what else can one wish for a place which will surely be one of your favourite memories of Paris and definitely figure among the delightful places to take your visiting relatives and friends!
