Special Event – The Ladies of Le Marais with Dr. Kelly Spearman

EVENT IS FULL

At our February Monthly Meeting, Dr. Kelly Spearman captivated us with stories of beautiful architecture right at our doorstep. The response was overwhelming: where can we find all these amazing buildings? We have the answer! Join Dr. Spearman on a meandering walk through the Marais to see the architectural treasures from her talk up close.

Discover some of the oldest hôtels particuliers (town mansions or townhouses) of the Marais district through the story of their illustrious owners and the few well-to-do women who ran them: aristocrats, courtesans, “précieuses”, rich widows and wealthy daughters. Explore the streets these famous characters once strode, admire the architectural settings of their lives (Hôtel de Sens, Hôtel d’Aumont, Hôtel de Beauvais, Hôtel d’Angoulême, Hôtel de Sully, etc.) the styles of the rooms they once inhabited and the objects they once cherished.

Witness the self-confidence of their passion for opulence and space and how they managed, with never a single lapse of taste, to exhibit their staggering wealth. The lives of the Ladies of the Marais, full of anecdote and a wit that is so vividly revealed in their journals, reflect the realities of the prosperous society of the Grand Siècle. They tell the tale of an area synonymous with good taste, in the midst of which the Place Royale(today Place des Vosges) takes us back to an era when France was the center of the world and Paris the heart of all fashions and delights.
