Lunch around the World – La Coupole – French
La Coupole stands as one of Paris’s most legendary brasseries, a magnificent Art Deco temple that has been capturing the spirit of Montparnasse since December 20, 1927.
Created by Ernest Fraux and René Lafon—two brothers-in-law who were fired from the nearby Café du Dôme and dreamed of building something grander—this monumental establishment opened at the height of the Roaring Twenties, when Montparnasse was the beating heart of artistic and intellectual Paris. At the center of the restaurant stands “La Terre” (Earth), a bronze sculpture by Louis Derbré, unveiled in 1993.
La Coupole became the unofficial headquarters of the Lost Generation and the School of Paris. From its opening night, the brasserie attracted an extraordinary constellation of talent. Ernest Hemingway, Man Ray, Jean Cocteau, Alberto Giacometti, Joséphine Baker, and Georges Braque were among the first regulars. In the 1930s, Pablo Picasso, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Édith Piaf made it their haunt. Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet met here in 1928, beginning their legendary romance.
